Start by stepping straight inside the Colosseum<\/b><\/p>

Imagine the scenes that played out below you \u2013 not just gladiatorial contests, but also wild-animal hunts, battle reenactments, and gruesome executions. Learn how long it took to build the Colosseum (the answer will surprise you!), and which city\u2019s destruction funded its construction (hint: the answer begins with \u2018J\u2019).<\/span>
<\/span>A Colosseum tour is the perfect introduction to ancient Rome as the ancient amphitheatre was a microcosm of Roman society. The seating was stratified according to class (find out who sat where and see if you can still see their places!) and the scenes that took place below \u2013 and the animals procured for them \u2013 reflected the reach and dominance of the Roman Empire. <\/span>

The Colosseum might be the city\u2019s blockbuster building, but the Forum is where Rome\u2019s history was written. Passing the Temple of Venus and Rome, built by the same emperor who envisaged the Pantheon, we\u2019ll enter the Forum along the Via Sacra (Sacred Road).<\/span><\/p>

Triumphant generals returning from successful campaigns would parade along this road, through the Forum and up to the Temple of Jupiter on the Capitoline. As we enter the Forum, I\u2019ll show you one of these parades, carved into the relief of a triumphal arch in the 1<\/span>st<\/span> century BC. We\u2019ll then follow in the footsteps of such names as Julius Caesar, Pompey the Great and Marcus Tullius Cicero as we make our way into the Roman Forum.<\/span><\/p>

The Roman Forum is a true treasure trove for the keen-eyed archaeologist. I\u2019ll show you the Temple of Vesta and the House of the Vestal Virgins \u2013 my personal favourite site. The Vestals were the cougars of ancient Rome: priestesses consigned to chastity in their youth but unleashed when richer, and in older age, on the young men of ancient Rome.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

During our time in the Roman Forum, I\u2019ll regale you with stories of the scandals, seditions and intrigues that made this public space the city\u2019s beating heart. Using visual props and aids, I\u2019ll bring the ruins you see before you to life, injecting life into the stone and travertine through the tales they tell and the names associated with them.<\/span><\/p>

As well as the Temple of Romulus (not Rome\u2019s founder, but another one), the Temple of Caesar (yup, Julius) and the Basilica of Maxentius, we\u2019ll explore the Forum\u2019s lesser-known sites, even visiting the place where Caesar was cremated. Having mined it for its treasures, we\u2019ll then ascend the Palatine Hill to see where Rome\u2019s history began.<\/span><\/p>

<\/b>The Palatine Hill has gifted us a lot: it\u2019s from the Latin word \u2018Palatinus\u2019 that we derive our word \u2018palace\u2019. Such was the wealth of those who lived there \u2013 from Cicero to Augustus Caesar, Caligula to Nero. As you\u2019ll see on this Complete Ancient Rome tour, you can still see traces of its imperial grandeur in the architecture of the palaces that line it.<\/span><\/p>

But Palatine Hill is famous for another Roman legend. For it was here that one of Rome\u2019s founders, Romulus, settled while his twin set up camp on a neighbouring hill. <\/b>Yes! There<\/span> will be at least two bathrooms or rest stops along the way.<\/span>

<\/span>How should I dress for the tour?<\/b>
<\/span>Please dress in a casual and comfortable way, keeping in mind the different seasons in Rome. I recommend layering regardless of when you visit. Indoor spaces will be heated in the winter and air-conditioned in the summer, so be ready for temperature changes. Bring a hat and sunscreen during the summer<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Can I take pictures during the Colosseum Tour?<\/b>
<\/b>Pictures are allowed, with and without flash, throughout the whole itinerary\u2026even selfies with me! ;). Please do share your best ones on Facebook or Instagram!<\/span><\/p>

Can we find a taxi or ride after the tour?<\/b>
<\/b>I\u2019ll show you at the end of the tour where to find the closest taxi stand. If there are no white cabs, app-based services like Uber are available too.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

<\/b>Of course! I love seeing kids’ reactions to the awesome artworks and hearing their questions. Over the years, several energetic and curious kids\/teens have enjoyed my tours, especially when they “get” that I’m not testing them with questions, just trying to prompt their observations. Kids will have fun while learning in the environments where history happened!<\/span><\/p>

<\/b>This tour is mostly outdoors. <\/span>The tour is conducted in the rain or shine. Some locations may not be open or accessible depending on weather conditions and\/or Colosseum and Roman Forum closings.<\/span><\/p>
