This tour is an amazing blend of food, history and fun.
Eat your way through the Eternal City on my Rome Bites Food and History tour! From sumptuous supplì (fried rice balls oozing with tomato sauce and mozzarella) and ‘Jewish-style’ fried artichokes to fillets of baccalà (think English fish and chips, but so much better), I’ll take you to try it all over the course of three unforgettable hours.
As we wander through the historic centre, I’ll nourish you with stories, anecdotes and, of course, enough Italian food to last you a lifetime! What’s more, come with me and you’ll be exploring Rome with a local, venturing off the beaten path to discover the places the Romans try to keep to themselves.
Famous for its daily farmers’ market and vintage fashion stores, Campo de’ Fiori is also a favourite among food lovers (which is essentially every Italian!). I’ll give you the fascinating history of this square, which means the “square of flowers”, before we duck inside one of its most long-standing cheese places to munch our way through some treats.
A balanced diet is the most important thing for an Italian so we’ll be seeking out a range of delicious street food as we go. Fancy some deep-fried baccalà (cod-fillet) or heavenly zucchini? A platter of local cheeses washed down with regional wines? How about a few slices of Roman pizza? (Much thinner than its Neapolitan counterpart, but just as delicious in its simplicity.) I have the perfect Rome bites itinerary in mind, but can chop and change its order depending on what you want to eat!
Not many people know that Rome’s most classic cuisine is infused with Jewish cooking. But la cucina romana-ebraica, as it’s called, is one of the city’s most beloved culinary staples, and nowhere do they do it better than in the Jewish Ghetto. Walking the short distance from Campo de’ Fiori past ancient temples and medieval churches, we’ll venture into the Ghetto to try its famed artichokes. Deep-fried until they’re crispy, they taste a little like potato chips. Only so. much. better.
From the Ghetto it’s a short stroll across the River Tiber to the trendy area of Trastevere. And you’ll be grateful for the walk because we have so much more food to get through! One of the absolute highlights is trapizzino – a warmed, hollowed-out bread roll filled with such succulent delights as meatballs, parmigiana and even hunter’s chicken, Roman-style. Everything up to now will have got your appetite going because after exploring Trastevere we’ll sit down for dinner.
What better way to round off your Rome Bites foodie adventure than with a sit-down meal in an authentic trattoria. Sat among local friends and families engaged in the serious business of dining, we’ll taste our way through a true cornucopia of Roman classics: the delightfully simple cacio e pepe and carbonara (which originates from Rome!), just to name a few.
Linger on with wine and flowing conversation, until you’re ready to end the evening (or indeed start it by heading out on the town). But before we part ways I’ll take you to one of my favourite gelaterias (or even a tiramisù shop!) to indulge in the creamy stuff of dreams.
Hang on every word as the food and neighborhood come alive in a way only Foods of NY Tours can do.

We only eat kosher: are kosher meals available on this tour?
Yes, no worries! I’ll be happy to set up a Kosher Food Tour in the Ghetto, focusing on the many kosher groceries, bakeries and restaurants that call the neighborhood home. From old-time favorites (Jewish Style artichoke, pan-fried cod fillet) and treats from newer establishments, including pizza and artisanal pastries and cookies that kosher foodies are still getting used to.
Will there be a bathroom break or a rest stop during your Rome Bites tour?
Yes! There will be at least one or two bathroom stops along the way.
Can we find a taxi or ride after the tour?
I’ll show you at the end of the tour where to find the closest taxi stand. If there are no white cabs, app-based services like Uber are available too.
How should I dress for the tour?
Please dress in a casual and comfortable way, keeping in mind the different seasons in Rome. I recommend layering regardless of when you visit. Indoor spaces will be heated in the winter and air-conditioned in the summer, so be ready for temperature changes. Bring a hat and sunscreen during the summer
Is this tour mostly indoors or outdoors?
This tour is mostly outdoors.
How much do your tours cost?
Pricing varies with each tour. It depends on the number of participants, admission fees, transportation costs and other factors. I will always try to budget the tours to your needs!
